Your Guide to Winter Skincare

November 1st, 2022, By Peter Bialkowski

Summer is long gone. As the weather changes, what we use on our skin should also change. If you want to mix up your skincare routine but need help figuring out where to start, keep reading.

The Australian Journal of Pharmacy (AJP) says that cold weather can cause skin problems. The combination of cold weather and central heat causes dry skin and cracked lips. This leads to the biggest issue of skincare in the winter months - dehydration.

According to AJP and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Andrea Suarez (Dr. Dray on YouTube), an essential part of winter skin care is maintaining a hydrated and moisturized skin barrier. During the summer, we sweat. Sweat leads to clogged pores. Therefore, we should avoid heavy creams or other products contributing to the clog. This is why gel moisturizers are most popular this time, as they are super lightweight but will get the job done. In the winter, these don't cut it. To transition to a winter product, it's recommended to look for a fragrance-free, noncomedogenic (won't clog pores) heavier moisturizer that will hydrate the skin and keep it from cracks and wrinkles - bonus points if it's cruelty-free! My current favorite is Walgreens' Advanced Moisture Cream.

After finding the perfect, rich moisturizer, it's time to change that SPF. According to dermatologists, SPF is the most crucial part of a skincare routine. Not just for the beach, we should wear a minimum of SPF 30 on our face and neck 365 days of the year. Not to be confused with the thick, greasy body sunscreens used at the beach, there are plenty of elegant, affordable SPF products to use over moisturizer to protect our skin from damaging rays. My current favorites are Trader Joe's Daily Facial SPF 45 and Jack Black's Oil-Free Sun Guard SPF 45 - both are under $15!

Finally, it's super important to maintain a healthy, colorful diet, get 7-8 hours of sleep, and exercise accordingly. Products can only go so far! Keeping ourselves mentally and physically fit will help our bodies adjust to climate change!
